AREA GUIDE and LINKS
Acadia Park Kayak Tours

Here you will find links to and descriptions of some of the best places to visit in Bar Harbor and the immediate and greater Downeast Maine area including restaurants, shops, and activities from the perspective of a local who knows the area well and has done it all.

Unlike most website guides for the area no one is paying me to be listed here and the recommendations are based solely on merit.

If you choose to patronize any of these organizations please let them know you found their information on my website.

With the possible exception of the reciprocal links section at the bottom nobody gets on these pages unless they are excellent at what they do and I can recommend them without reservation.

Accommodations
The Bar Harbor Hostel
An affordable and attractive place to stay in down town Bar Harbor. The hostel has showers, laundry, free internet, a kitchen, group rooms, a single room, lockers, and tent platforms.

Update: Unfortunately the Hostel no longer exist. I am sure the town had rational budgetary reasons for closing it down but I can’t help feeling that it was a shortsighted decision. Bar Harbor can be an expensive place to stay and I felt the Hostel helped to give the town a more democratic soul. After all Bar Harbor is the town most associated with one of the nation’s most well known National Parks, which were meant to be equally accessible to all.
During the last year of the Hostel’s operation as he was walking through town President Obama met and took pictures with some foreign students outside of the hostel who were staying there.
If you are looking to open a hostel in Maine you would have plenty of business here in Bar Harbor.

My other suggestion for accommodations would be a bed and breakfast, a rental cottage, or one of the smaller locally owned hotels.  In general the service at these establishments will be much more personal and friendly than at the large corporate hotels and you will be supporting local business owners who will  keep your money circulating in our local economy.

The Black Friar Inn
The Black Friar has a lot of character and a unique atmosphere unlike any other spot in Bar Harbor as well as some of the best bar food in town. It is just up the road from the beach put in spot we use in Bar Harbor. Here is their own description-

The Black Friar offers six uniquely restored rooms, an ideal in-town location, and full service British pub. With fine architectural woodwork from past Bar Harbor "cottages" throughout, there is an "old European charm" to the inn, and is best described as a gentlemen's retreat and a ladies' delight.
